Our 1967 Mercury Cougar and how she came to be
Candy-O In October of 2001, Steve and I drove thru Wingate NC and spotted a 1967 Mercury Cougar Coupe. Steve and I stopped to look at her, she looked okay from the outside, her 302 ran strong; new tires and plenty of spare parts. We had her towed to our house, started going thru her and found that she had a lot of rust. So Steve started searching for parts. Well little to our knowledge of this type of cat, they are rare and very hard to find parts for. Steve continued to search, and came across a web site Desert Valley Auto Parts. Steve found parts that day and asked the Man about cutting out parts and shipping them, the man told him that it would be very costly to do this. The man said I have a better deal, why don’t I sell you this 1967 Mercury Cougar with this rare bench set, 390 GT engine. Steve looked at me and said, well what do you think we should do? All I could say was "Go for it".
In March 2002, we had her shipped to us. When we say shipped to us, she was shipped. She came all the way from Phoenix Arizona on a flatbed trailer. She was shipped to our place of employment, I was unable to see her when she arrived, but Steve waited with anticipation. When she came into view, Steve said to himself "What have I done?" She arrived with 3 flat tires, cocked to one side, no keys, a big dent in the driver door, graffiti down the passenger side, and parking lot dings everywhere. Steve loaded her onto a rollback and took her home. Steve came back to work to finish out the day. When Steve and I left work that afternoon, we came home to see our new cat. Steve opened the shop door and said to me. Are you ready to see what she looks like? Not knowing what she looked like when she arrived, I said sure. Steve and I started going thru the car to see what she had to offer. After about 2 hours and 2 inches of Arizona dust, we found registration slips with all the same man’s name on them. So we went on line to see if the man still existed. Low and behold he did. Wayne Closure was the person who bought the car new. And he told us that he had fun seeing how fast he could go from stop light to stop light, and that he had planed to give the car to his boy but someone stole the emblems and the valve covers off the car. So he donated it to a church auction at that time it only had 74,000 miles on her. And that is what the car had on it when it arrived to us. The church had sold it at auction and the car was never titled again until Desert Valley Auto Parts received her. We decided that we had something worth restoring. Steve wanted to see if the engine would at least turn over by hand, and it did. She had so much compression behind her, Steve said lets get a carburetor, valve covers, and a distributor and see what she will do. Steve figured having that good compression she should crank right up. Well after a little spit and sputter she cranked up and purred like a kitten. And the rest was a labor of love that the whole family enjoyed.
